The first three months of the year have almost gone by, so it’s time for a TBR update! I posted this year’s ‘to be read’ in this post. Let me tell you how I’ve done so far!
How I’ve done:
So far I’ve read 4 out of the 10 books. I’m happy with that. If I keep up this pace, completing the list will go smoothly. This is what I thought of the novels I read:
I loved Circe by Madeline Miller! It’s my favourite book I’ve read so far in 2019. I gave it 5 out of 5 stars. I love how Miller reworked the mythology. My favourite part was most definitely Circe’s character. She was such a strong, layered, morally grey woman. I loved her evolution throughout the story.
I also read Sea Prayer by Khaled Hosseini. I’ve ticked Hosseini’s name off the list, but I would still like to read The Kite Runner. Sea Prayer was a really short book, but I liked it. The illustrations were stunning and added a lot to the story. A 4 out of 5 from me.
What If It’s Us by Becky Albertalli and Adam Silvera was really disappointing. I didn’t root for the characters to be together. Frankly, I didn’t care. Both Arthur and Ben did things that rubbed me the wrong way. At times, they reacted too dramatically, in my opinion. At other times the problems were too easily resolved. I gave this 2 out of 5 stars and wouldn’t recommend it. Both of the authors have better works.
Lastly, I finished The Wind-Upbird Chronicle by Haruki Murakami. I’ve been reading it with my book club over the past few months. Each week reading and discussing a few chapters. Ultimately, I thought it was okay. There were part I really liked and there were parts were I was bored out of my mind. I was often confused, but just accepted that and read on. Is this the next best book? No. Is it trash? No. It’s somewhere in between. If you’re looking for a strange book, with a plot that makes little sense, but with an easy writing style, I’d recommend it. I gave it 3 out of 5 stars.
