Down The TBR Hole #6 // even more unpopular opinions

Hey! I’m back with another Down The TBR Hole post! The meme was originally created by Lia @ Lost in a Story. This is how it works:

  • Go to your Goodreads to-read shelf.
  • Order on ascending date added.
  • Take the first 5 (or 10 if you’re feeling adventurous) books. Of course if you do this weekly, you start where you left off the last time.
  • Read the synopses of the books
  • Decide: keep it or should it go?

My TBR counts 109 books. You can find my previous posts in this series here. Let’s get started!

down t tbr hole 1

Nimona by Noelle Stevenson

The synopsis of this book doesn’t sound that interesting to me anymore, but since my library has it I’m willing to give it a chance. I’ll see what I think.

Honor Girl: A Graphic Memoir by Maggie Thrash

I’m in doubt. The blurb really interests me, but my only access to it is buying it. I think I’ll keep it on here for now.

In Real Life by Cory Doctorow and Jen Wang

To be frank, I’ll never actually read this. My library doesn’t have this either and I don’t care enough to buy it.

A Darker Shade of Magic by V. E. Schwab

Okay, please don’t kill me for this, but I really don’t want to pick this up. I just don’t care about fantasy anymore, especially high fantasy. Nothing about this excites me. This novel has been on my TBR for years and it feels freeing to finally get rid of it. I know everyone loves this and I can believe that it’s a great book, it’s just not for me.

VERDICT: GO ( sorry not sorry )

Beauty Queens by Libba Bray

Yet again a very well-loved author. I don’t think this will be my thing either. Even though I’m always here for a book with some feminist themes, I believe I won’t find the humour funny. I’m going to let this one pas.

VERDICT: GO (How scandalous.)

Amina’s Voice by Hena Khan

I’m very happy that this book exists as it’s important to have diverse stories. The cover is absolutely stunning as well. However, I don’t buy middle grade anymore, because I’m not that big of a fan. I’m pretty sure I’ll never actually get to it.

VERDICT: GO (I’m sad about it though.)

A Map for Wrecked Girls by Jessica Taylor

I have absolutely no interest in this anymore. Byeeeee

Style by Chelsea M. Cameron

I’m definitely keeping this. I’ve been looking for some lesbian literature and I have a feeling I will really like this.

Invictus by Ryan Graudin

I have no idea when I will get to this, but the plot sounds super interesting. I’m keeping it for now.

Future Leaders of Nowhere by Emily O’Beirne

If I’m honest, I have to admit that I totally forgot what this was about and I was ready to let it go. However, rereading the blurb got me very excited. A sweet f/f summer romance with smart characters? Count me in!

What do you think? Would you have chosen differently? Have you read any of the ones I’m keeping? What did you think? Tell me in the comments!

Thanks for reading! See you next time!

  1. Yess you should read Future Leaders of Nowhere! I also read Style and liked it, but I didn’t love it :/
I adore A Darker Shade of Magic but I completely understand you don’t want to read it. I’m also in a big fantasy slump right now and I can’t imagine picking up high fantasy any time soon.

  2. Oh I think it’s freeing to let go of the books you won’t be able to enjoy, despite what others might think. ADSOM is really popular and I personally loved it, but I completely get your choice here and I think it’s for the best, no need to force yourself to keep a book you know you won’t be into 🙂
I’m glad you are keeping Nimona, I haven’t read it just yet, but also have it on my TBR. I have heard great things about it. Hope we both will enjoy it 😀 Happy reading! 🙂

  4. I really liked Nimona so I’m glad you kept it! By the way its main theme is fantasy so if you’re not into it anymore maybe it’s not the book for you (? I don’t know I just hate reading books I don’t like because I feel bad, so I’m just sort of warning you, not telling you what to do!)
