Happily by Chauncey Rogers // entertaining and creative!

I highly enjoyed Happily. It was very entertaining and it kept me hooked. The author sent me an e-ARC in exchange for an honest review and that’s what I’ll be writing today! More excitingly, today, April 3rd, is the book’s publication day!

If the shoe fits, wear it.
If it doesn’t, make it.
Laure is a teenage street urchin just trying to get away. Where the rest of the world sees an enchanting love story, Laure sees royal incompetence and an opportunity to exploit it. She’ll have wealth and a way out of a life she detests, if she can only manage to hoodwink the royal family and survive to tell the tale.
Genre: YA (MG-friendly) Fantasy/Fairy-Tale Retelling
This review is spoiler free.

This is a Cinderella retelling and I think that aspect of the book was very nicely and creatively done. The typical elements of the story came through but in a completely different way. I really enjoyed that.

I liked the writing style. The author chose to write this novel in second person POV and I think that was a great decision. I felt as if the main character was speaking to you directly and that kept me intrigued. The writing flowed well.

I was a fan of the characters as well. The main character Laure was rather unlikable. She was selfish and did questionable things. She changes throughout the book though. She learns to be better. I was very entertained reading her story.
Then there’s Luc. I liked him as he wanted to help people and always did the right thing. He made Laure a better person.
As for the prince, he was nice and generally seemed a good person. I was SO glad the author didn’t make this a love triangle.

As for the plot, it definitely kept me intrigued. I looked forward to picking the book up again. The way the retelling elements were put into it was rather unpredictable and there were some plot twists I didn’t see coming as well. Yet there were some things that were very predictable. I wasn’t a big fan of the ending. It was too easy in my opinion and there was something came out of nowhere.

Overall, I enjoyed my reading experience. I gave this a solid three out of five stars. I hope you enjoyed this post. See you next time!
