My Diverse 2018 TBR

Just like last year, I’m setting myself a TBR. This isn’t a very strict one, it’s more a guideline to which books I’d like to pick up. Anyway, this year I focused on diverse books and picked ones that have a different perspective than mine. I’ve also been a bit more realistic and chose books I have access to. So without further ado, let’s get into it!

MY TBR

Both Autoboyography by Christina Lauren and The Power by Naomi Alderman are on my physical TBR. As one of my 2018 goals is to read every book on that list, of course I’m going to read these. I’m very much looking forward to it. Autoboyography features a m/m romance with a Mormon love interest while The Power is written from perspectives from all over the world.

The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller, The Color Purple by Alice Walker and Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi I chose because I’ve been interested in them for a while and I’ve heard amazing things. The Song of Achilles features a m/m romance between two Greek men. The Color Purple has a black lesbian main character. Homegoing has several black main characters and deals amongst other things with slavery.

I love Rick Riordan’s books and I highly enjoyed the first two books in the Magnus Chase series. I’m most looking forward to reading the concluding novel, The Ship of the Dead! The book features a practising muslim side character, a deaf side character and a gender-fluid side character.

I chose We, two boys by Aline Sax because the synopsis intrigued me and I wanted to add a Belgian book onto the list. The book is set at the turn of the 20th century in Antwerp and New York City. It features a gay main character.

I chose Golden Boy by Abigail Tarttelin simply because I was intrigued and because I’ve never read a book with an intersex main character.

Blue is the Warmest Color by Julie Maroh, George by Alex Gino and More than This by Patrick Ness have been on my radar for quite a while. Now that I’ve found them in my local library I’m definitely going to read them. Blue is the Warmest Color has a French, lesbian main character, George features a transgender main character and More Than This has a gay main character.

Lastly, Born a Crime by Trevor Noah made the list, because I want to read more about the Apartheid and I’m hoping it’s funny.

As a bonus, I also want to mention Leah on the Offbeat by Becky Albertalli. This hasn’t come out yet, but I’m most definitely going to read it! It features a fat, bisexual main character.
