Today I wanted to write about a topic I’ve been thinking about a lot. Is there a pressure to read a certain amount of books here in the community? It’s been discussed a lot recently, so I thought it would be a good time to add my own two cents.
Ariel Bisett posted a video a few days ago and that sparked a big discussion within the community. She talks about how she feels reading has become competitive in a way and also about how she feels she needs to read certain books to be relevant.
If you would ask me if I felt any pressure, my answer would most definitely be yes. I feel like I have to read a certain amount of books every month to have things to talk about and to keep up. Yet it isn’t possible to read all the books, the older ones and the new releases. Both time-wise and money-wise. It really stresses me out.
Since I’ve started my blog, I’ve been buying more books than I used to. That means that I always have a physical TBR. It is another factor that is pressuring. I don’t go to the library anymore because I have too many books I need to read that I own myself. I feel guilty about re-reading because of the same reason. That is something I’m very sad about. I love re-reading and I used to do it all the time!
I would conclude that my reading habits have definitely changed and that I do feel pressured. Yet I do realise that this is a self-imposed problem. No one has come up to me and said I don’t read enough to be a part of this community we have here and I don’t think they ever will.
So I’m not pointing any fingers at all to those who read a lot and have big wrap ups. If they can comfortably read that much and enjoy it, they should most definitely do it! Heck, even I had very big wrap ups this summer because I had the time! I just saw a video by Merphy Napier in which she wonderfully discusses this and I would recommend you watch it.
I really want to stop pressuring myself this much, but I don’t know how.
What do you think? Do you feel the same? Do you have any tricks to stop it? Tell me!
