The Unpopular Opinions book tag

I wasn’t tagged by anyone to do the unpopular opinions book tag, but this morning I binge-watched a ton of unpopular opinion videos on Booktube and I decided I wanted to do it too. I don’t know what it is, but I love this tag! This is the original creator. Many thanks to her for creating it!

Disclaimer: These are all just my personal opinions and this post isn’t meant to offend anyone personally. That’s totally not my intention.

A Popular Book or series that you didn’t like

Well, we’re off with the most important question. I have a few answers for this one. First off, Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell. This book gets so much hype and I just don’t get it. I thought the story was a bit pointless and anticlimactic. Did not like it. Next up, All The Bright Places by Jennifer Niven. For the same reasons really. Lastly, I want to mention Dumplin’ by Julie Murphy. I did not like this book and I don’t get why it’s hyped up so much. I have a review explaining what my problems with this book were and boy, I had quite a few.

A Popular Book or series that every one else seems to hate but you love

Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard is a book I loved. I don’t care that it had tons of tropes. I loved it with its fast pace and several plot twists. I’m only talking about the first book here. The sequel, Glass Sword, was a massive disappointment. That was a bummer.

A Love Triangle where the main character ended up with the person you did NOT want them to end up with (warn ppl for spoilers) OR an OTP that you don’t like

Spoilers for To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before by Jenny Han

Peter and Lara Jean from To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before by Jenny Han. I didn’t ship them. They just didn’t seem to fit well together. I shipped Lara Jean with the other guy. I don’t even remember his name though. Oops. It’s not Josh, the neighbour. It’s the other one.

A popular book Genre that you hardly reach for

That would be horror and thrillers. Hell No. I just don’t like to be scared and I don’t see why you would want that.

A popular or beloved character that you do not like

Adam. From which book, you ask? Well, Adam from The Shatter me series by Tahereh Mafi and Adam from The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater. They’re rather similar characters and I found them both very annoying and whiny. They both redeemed themselves in the last books though. So at least that’s something. Apparently, I have something against Adams. I haven’t found a single one that I’ve liked, which is kind of ironic as my name is Eva.

A popular author that you can’t seem to get into

Well, Jennifer Niven, Julie Murphy and Rainbow Rowell. I have only read one book by each of them and as I’ve already said, I didn’t like those.

A popular book trope that you’re tired of seeing. (examples “lost princess”, corrupt ruler, love triangles, etc.)

I’m sick of bad boys who do horrible things, but girls still fall in love with them and act like they’re god. They treat the girls so badly and are so mean to them, but it’s never addressed in the book. Ugh. My main example is Four from the Divergent Trilogy.

A popular series that you have no interest in reading

I have zero interest in reading Twilight. They just don’t seem like good books. Like at all. I feel like most people don’t like them and the people who do only like the books out of nostalgia and good memories. I also have no interest in watching the movies.

The saying goes “The book is always better than the movie”, but what movie or T.V. show adaptation do you prefer more than the book?

The Hobbit by J. R. R. Tolkien. I stand by that firmly. The movies are great. The book, not so much. I just didn’t like the writing style at all. I actually DNF’ed the book half-way through. I couldn’t do it.

  1. It pains me that you don’t like The Hobbit, but I guess we’ll have to agree to disagree 🙂 I do agree with you about Four from Divergent– that trope NEEDS to stop ASAP!

  2. Ugh. I hate love interests who’re just mean and rude to the main character but he / she never says anything about it. I think it send out the wrong message that it’s okay for your SO to treat you badly (or anyone else for that matter).

  3. I agree with quite a few of your answers, particularly regarding Rainbow Rowell, Red Queen, however, neither of them are on the same level as The Hobbit. Like you, I could not like that book and I ended up DNFing it too. Along with the wishy-washy writing style, I found the story boring and so slow. I don’t often mind slow books but The Hobbit was painfully slow!

  4. I love this tag, reading unpopular opinion is so much fun xD Four treats girls terrible!? I never read the books but I did see the movies…please don’t tell me he’s a total ass in the books and hollywood turned him nice (if not snarky)!!

  5. Ugh I was not of fan of neither Adam nor Warner in Shatter Me… I really hated both of them.
I actually wasn’t a fan of the Hobbit book or movies… idk the movies had too much filler for me. Don’t know if you’ve read it but Me and Earl and the Dying Girl is a good example of a movie that I think is better than the book (and I really like the book so that’s saying something)

  6. Omigosh, Four from Divergent. I don’t get him either. I didn’t agree with a lot of his decisions, and his book boyfriend status. I haven’t tried Rainbow Rowell fully, but I tried a part of it and I had to agree with you – was not a fan of the little bit I tried because it seemed too slow and boring. Glad to know that I perhaps shouldn’t try it again (and sorry you had a bad time with it).

Wonderful post, Eva! Also, I noticed that I’ve been missing your posts. I haven’t seen your posts since the start of August. D: Obviously you were posting, but I don’t know if there was an issue with my Reader or not. D:
